I Have Only to Follow Him (Psalm 23)

The Lord is my Shepherd – I have only to follow Him.

No one but the Lord makes me lie down in green pastures.
No one but the Lord guides me along right paths.
No one but the Lord refreshes my soul.
It’s only Him.
I have only to follow Him.

He forces me, in my stubbornness, to rest; I have only to follow Him.

He leads me in the way of righteousness for His own glory; I have only to follow Him.

He guides me into a pitch-black valley, where I can’t see my hand before my face, much less the path on which I’m walking. In this unfamiliar territory, I can only trust that He is going before me. By His help, I will resolve myself against the fear of evil.

I know You wield well your rod and staff, and are powerful to retrieve me from any erroneous way. You are able to save me from any faulty path I stumble onto in the dark.

Your correction is a comfort; Your ability and willingness to discipline me, a reassurance; for I want more than anything to stay on Your path. I praise You for your corrective tools of goodness and love. Surely they will follow me as long as I follow You – and I have only to follow You – and I will dwell with You forever.
